Leslie Markus’s book moves through documentary photography with lightness and discretion. To document would be to confirm or witness something, a fact; the documenting here is subjective, in between the lines, without proof but with propositions and questions. The daily round of three siblings is diluted until an amalgam forms. Intimacy, ordinary life, the relationships and the tensions of the family surroundings are set down with delicacy and care. The book goes beyond the family album that dates and closes a period: the essay stays open to readings and glimpses of where the people in the narrative are going.
