Born in Niterói nine years after the end of the Second World War, Diniz grew up listening to stories of submarines, air raids and shipwrecks. As a boy he watched the sea wondering which submarines might be down there, and soon they became the subject of his drawings.

As an adult the interest intensified, and here he articulates frames of submarines at sea — models he built in his studio — together with period documents and self-portraits.
