Who is called a 'non-woman' in Japan? What does the expression 'expired Christmas cake' mean? Why do young Japanese women prefer to stay single? Does drinking tea together deepen a partnership? In 2014 the literary documentarian Barbora Baronová and the photographer Dita Pepe explored the phenomena of unmarriedness and childlessness in Japan, in the prefectures of Saitama and Tokyo. Their collaboration resulted in the art book Being a Miss in Japan, a unique artistic interpretation of deep sociological subjects.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
