This study offers a comprehensive analysis of fifty years of publishing in Portugal. Examining more than eighty works, it investigates the interaction between picture, design and text. Across seven chapters it explores the use of the printed volume as a political tool, the relation between the photographic image and writing, materiality and performativity, the production of territories and identities, and the transformations of that editorial practice in the first decades of the twenty-first century. It is a response to the scarcity of extensive research into that history; the selection was based on the period 1974-2015 and on a direct connection to Portuguese territory, and it highlights key works and offers selective bibliographies for those wishing to go further.
