In 2009 André Príncipe and Marco Martins travelled to Tokyo to shoot a film about elliptical narratives and the importance of diaristic practice in Japanese photography. Over a month, and in a totally improvised way, the two Portuguese filmmakers shot hours of 16 mm footage and thousands of frames of their daily life as well as of their encounters with photographers such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira, Hiromix, Kohei Yoshiyuki and Kajii Syoin. Their film Traces of a Diary was shown in festivals around the world and received the jury prize at Documenta Madrid. Initially it was to be a mixture of stills and 16 mm material, but during editing it was decided that only the moving pictures would be used; about one hundred rolls of Tri-X 400 remained in a box, unused. Those frames are now revisited here, in a work that is as much about photo books and the way we read them as it is about Japanese photographers.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
