This work shows a sequence of pictures shot in the summer of 2015 on the set of Colo, a film by Teresa Villaverde. Ensaio — the word in Portuguese means both essay and rehearsal — is a melancholic study of the mechanisms of identity construction. It revolves around a group of teenagers and their need to preserve a sense of purity threatened by a world of adults in crisis. Desire, uncertainty and a need to take risks are the driving forces behind a quiet angst that eases only in contact with nature. Like in a rock song, Duarte is at the eye of the storm, where things can be observed more peacefully.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
