"During the summer of 1992 I travelled to a field of new-age travellers in Sussex, to the Forest Fayre in Gloucestershire and to Glastonbury in Somerset. I was searching for the spirit of the New Age, with its loose coalition of nomadic ways of living — neo-pagans, hippies, travellers and circus communities — brought together by shared beliefs, a growing ecological awareness, bacchanalian celebration, pagan ritual and the renewal of the seasons." The origins of the movement can be traced back to the squats and free festivals of the 1970s; that summer saw a year of cancelled free festivals and the biggest free rave ever held in the country, which paved the way for the 1994 Criminal Justice Act.
