"As 1979 turned into 1980 I found myself working at Granada TV in Manchester as a programme researcher and occasional presenter for the regional arts review programme Celebration. I was also trying to keep alive my photographic practice. One of my television colleagues was Tony Wilson, who at that time was busy setting up Factory Records with Alan Erasmus. Previously I had photographed a Factory night at the Russell Club in Hulme, hosted by Wilson and the promoter Alan Wise, which featured the Buzzcocks and John Cooper Clarke. Tony liked what I'd done and began inviting me along to gigs and recording sessions."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
