The first book by Marcelo Costa and the second in the publisher's collection of photographic essays. Mixing appropriated images of ex-votos with landscapes disturbed by human action, the pictures appear wrapped in an ochre haze, the result of strategies the artist uses to reinforce both the cadence of time as it flows and the wearing down of things.

He invites us to desecrate images, displacing them from the place where they are circumscribed to a given social function in order to free their symbolic developments. Here the corrupted landscape and the feminine in the face of existential pain strain the medium's capacity for emphatic representation, and move at a disproportionate speed towards a disconcerting notion of time.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
