Xiaoliang Huang's work is mostly about daily life, and by daily life he does not mean anything necessarily extraordinary or negative. His technique creates a cinematic, dream-like quality of the subconscious, magical realist worlds made out of projected shadows and layered images. By working the most fundamental elements of the medium — light and shadow — and following the ancient tradition of Chinese shadow puppetry, he stretches the boundaries of representation in a display of pre-production skill. In an era of information overload we often feel the repetition of life, the boredom, the numbness.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
