In August 1982 one was in Fuzhou and the other in Urumqi. In an unexpected turn of events, two pen pals who had never met found themselves connected through a photography magazine, and from then on they exchanged self-portraits and discussed their insights and experiences of self-portraiture in the accompanying letters. Opening the envelopes, the enthusiasm for the unknown turned into shared joys and sorrows, embodied in silver salt and ink. In August 2016 a curator's matchmaking brought the two strangers together again and opened a new discussion.
