Sean Lotman's pictures of Japan immerse us in his imagination and interpretation of reality in a land he has come to call home. They encapsulate his existence there, as a person who is intrinsically bound to his surroundings yet still exists as a foreigner. At times psychedelic, they transpose what he sees into a maelstrom of mystery and wonder.
This is not a static document of the country. Nor is it a journal or a contest of picture making. Rather, it is an exploration of existence, a dive into a world unknown in suspended reality, imbued with colour and fascination.
Lotman is a master printer. Each plate in the book has been reproduced from carefully hand printed C-type prints made in the darkroom. Following the process from the moment of capture to the final print has allowed him to instil his own subjective reality into physical objects.
