Dream Lover

Bob Foster

Inspired by Kenneth Anger's 1965 short film Kustom Kar Kommandos, of which the romantic doo-wop song “Dream Lover” by The Paris Sisters is the soundtrack, Bob Foster spent a summer visiting numerous car shows to indulge in a metallic smorgasbord of crisp paint jobs, shiny rims, eccentric themed interiors and pristine modded engines.

Employing his signature loose framing and hard flash style, Foster created a series of abstracted and intensely energetic pictures, leaping from proudly presented engine bays to pimped out foot wells and furry pink steering wheels with upbeat aplomb. He takes the kitsch of Anger's original vision and injects it with an electric fetishism.

From the artist: “I made this because I love glamour, camp and gaudiness. All those things are really just self expression unfettered by dull expectations of taste and narrow social mores. Life can be boring and grey and a real trudge, and people love to tell you that's all there is and any attempt to deviate from that isn't sensible or isn't good somehow. When you're young you're often told to temper your inclinations, to keep your head down and be as normal as possible. I think the people who created the cars in these pictures are fighting against that.”

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
