There is a subtle sense of vertigo that assails us at once when we look at Ascolini's work. Straight away we catch the pervasive, at times unsettling presence of shadow — a darkness that here has often become absolute black, surrounding and isolating a fragment of the image, or penetrating like a blade to the heart of what we see, in an ambiguity of vision.
