Some years ago John Offenbach decided to embark on a series of portraits of Jews of different ethnicities, among them those from India, China and Ethiopia. Not just the great and the good: it had to include the homeless and the rich, the incarcerated and the addict.

He travelled to twelve countries, among them Argentina, Azerbaijan, India, Ethiopia, China and Ukraine, and made around a hundred and twenty black-and-white portraits. The aim of the series is to look at faces.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
