In 1953 Cuba had six hundred and ninety-four cinemas and theatres. Havana alone had a hundred and thirty-four, more than New York or Paris.

In 2014 the documentary maker Carolina Sandretto decided to find and record, with a medium-format camera of the nineteen fifties, the surviving halls of that golden age. This book is the visual document of her journey through the cinemas of the island, recounting a part of the history and of the transformations of the country.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
