Through a wide selection of images from Seiland's monumental work Imperium Romanum, the book proposes a great ideal transcontinental journey, touching on emblematic archaeological sites such as Rome, Palmyra, Samaria and Epidaurus, across forty countries.

The Austrian artist travelled to the territories the Roman empire once stretched over, from Syria to Scotland and beyond, catching on film the different nuances of the interaction between people and ruins. The project sets out, in pictures that are sometimes hyperrealist and pop and sometimes symbolist and minimalist, the inextricable and vital relation between Roman antiquity and the present.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
