The Hollywood legend John Malkovich may seem an unlikely choice as an artist's muse, but Sandro Miller calls him a dream to work with. Miller has been finding inspiration in the actor since the two first met in 1999.

In this collaboration he pays homage to the great makers of past and present, with Malkovich as his only model, in re-creations of forty-one iconic portraits. The project is a testament both to Miller's skill and to the actor's chameleon-like ability. After months of research, and with accurate costume and make-up, the re-creations are delightfully exact in lighting and editing, while Malkovich seems to inhabit the original subjects easily, whoever he is meant to portray.

He appears as the migrant mother of Dorothea Lange's Depression-era portrait, as a bewigged Andy Warhol cast in crimson, and as both sisters in Diane Arbus's Identical Twins, matching himself in a wide-collared dress and lace stockings.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
