Twenty-four interviews between Rémi Coignet and leading figures of the contemporary field. Daido Moriyama, Anders Petersen and Lewis Baltz look back over their work and set out what they think a photographic volume should be; across the interviews a geography of the present takes shape.

“One observation lies behind these conversations. Photographers, once you get them going on their work, all have a great deal to say about it. But their voices are not heard — or heard far too little — in the press. It was tempting to go and meet those whose work inspires me.

The interviews are built on a principle: to place oneself in the position of a reporter. Thirty to forty-five minutes in which a whole career is covered. They are the point of view of a maker on his own work at a given moment, with no second thoughts. But to build a conversation you need an object, otherwise it is only chatter — starting from the books was obvious to me from the outset.” — Rémi Coignet

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
