The fruit of a collaboration between the duo No Sovereign Author and the patients of the psychiatric day centre La Fabrique du Pré, at Nivelles in Belgium.

Laid out as a dictionary, it invites us to think the world of psychiatry again through the sensibility of the patients. New works of great visual force, made by the patients with the artists, illustrate each entry, proposing a radically fresh and unembarrassed approach. Each word, freed from its historical readings, opens onto a new reality, closer to us and to those who live it: under their hands and before our eyes, the scientific lexicon of psychiatry becomes a language of the heart.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
