“In the autumn of 2006 I saw a yellow label appear on the blue boxes of Polaroid 665. In five languages it announced the imminent death of that film. In the industry one never says that a product is stopped: one says it is discontinued. A blind person is a person with a visual impairment, a deaf person is hearing impaired, a film that dies is a discontinued product.

When the end of 665 was announced, I decided to work with that countdown in mind: only ten packs left, each containing ten views, then seven, five, four, three, two, one, finished. It was a new sensation in a digital age where everything seems infinite, free, light and volatile: I found myself in a restricted economy, with the need to think about every single view.”

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
