“Now that my three-year fixation on shooting Hawaii has finished and the book has been published, here we are in the blazing heat of August and I can finally take a little rest. I feel that a burden has been lifted from my shoulders.

One would think that for the foreseeable future I would be aiming my camera back at my main territory, but it won't work out that way: I won't be done with foreign work until I meet prior commitments to walk the streets of São Paulo and Mexico City. Putting those aside for the meantime, Tokyo is the place I feel most attracted to right now. In my plan I would head for Shinjuku, which never ceases to command attention, then expand my scope, first following the outskirts, then gradually winding my way back to the urban areas in a spiral movement, finally returning to Shinjuku at the end of the journey.

Though I've already lived some forty-seven years here, I could hardly say that I really know the city well. My coverage of most neighbourhoods has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. I'd like to begin by walking around Tateishi, Aoto or Koiwa along the Keisei Railway.”
