“Last November I went to New York for the first time in two years, for an event in the rather big gallery space, complete with library and cafe, of the Aperture house in the Chelsea gallery district. In the show titled TKY I made books containing about a hundred of my prints and handed them directly to the numerous visitors who had come to receive their reserved copies. The venue was packed with lots of New Yorkers, among them my friends Gerard Malanga and Larry Clark.

After doing this for two busy yet very pleasant days, I took some time off for a trip to Coney Island, where I enjoyed an enormously colourful afternoon. However the real thrill came later in the evening, when I took a dive into the billboard jungle of Times Square. The adrenalin rush the experience of bathing in the sparkling beams of light gave me made this the sexiest moment of my stay.”

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
