The first issue of the series to carry both new colour and black-and-white work, all of it made during a stay in Hong Kong the previous March.

“During my short stay of only four days I roamed the streets and shot whatever caught my attention whenever I had some time between the opening reception, press interviews and other items on my agenda.

And now, just as I'm writing this down, television footage of several major streets jumps to my eye, showing exactly the places I photographed crowded with hordes of local people, vehemently protesting and occupying the streets. Watching it, I began to ask myself what would have been if I happened to be there. I would have taken pictures, of course, and now I can't help but imagine what exactly I would have pointed my camera at. I had no choice but to think once again about myself, about the medium, about the world, about the stance of photographing things, and about the significance of the snapshot.

That's because it surely is easy to release the shutter button, but that conscious sense of distance that hovers in the space between the one who shoots and the one who is shot always contains some severe and delicate issues beyond imagination.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
