“Around the middle of the year I got slightly ill and eventually spent some time in hospital, after which I stayed at my home in Zushi. Except for some business and a rehabilitation programme in Tokyo, I spent most of the days that followed walking in the streets and making the occasional snapshot in the Shonan area.

But there is one particular thing about Zushi and Shonan: it is for me a place that necessarily brings back Takuma Nakahira. Now that I was staying there for the first time in years, there were various occasions to reminisce about my days with him, already more than fifty years ago. In the evenings I had plenty of time to read a collection of his reviews.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
