“Slightly delayed in part because of the coronavirus, we have just completed number forty-four. As people were told to stay inside, I spent about two days vegging out at home, and while all the world started talking about telework, it occurred to me that what I do for a living would probably have to be called footwork.

So I grabbed my camera and — very reluctantly — my face mask, jumped on a bus and then a train, and spent day after day wandering around Nakano and other stations on the Chuo line. Quite naturally there were few people in the streets and most shops had their shutters down, so walking through those sceneries felt in a way like walking through open film sets.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
