“I picked up brushes for the first time in many years. Simply reproducing the lines, crosses and circles that everyone in the world uses to underline their choices was not enough: I saw the possibility of inventing a new kind of object by marrying, organically and not arbitrarily, painting and the recorded image.

When I started painting the contacts it was all brush strokes and jubilation. The jubilation of painting recalled the celebration of making the picture. For me, making a picture was a celebration, was physical, and gave me a super charge.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
