“There are things I have lost amid the growing abundance, and things I have forgotten while living in the city. Instead of the stars I used to see in the sky, the night is filled with stars of neon that glitter suspiciously like beckoning light traps. From down in the valleys between buildings, the looming peaks of black concrete form sceneries that almost feel sublime to me.

Here I am, drinking and spluttering arguments in the middle of a downtown street, trying to forget the pain when my heart feels empty, and dreaming, as I take my Tokyo syndrome with just a little sigh. And I am going to laugh at things again tomorrow — not because I feel lonely or amused, but I will only hear myself muttering, what a great city this is.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
