The exhibition is part of the official program of the PhotoESPAÑA 2021 Festival.

It consists of public and private commissions focused on documenting Spain’s landscape and territory.

The catalog follows a conversational format and highlights the eleven projects that, in the curators’ opinion, “construct a concise and historically significant narrative on the subject of study.”

The exhibition In Spain. Photography, Commissions, Territories, 1983-2009 showcases various photographic projects exploring cities, territories, and their transformation processes, with 1992 as a central moment. Both the exhibition and its accompanying book reflect, for the first time, the most significant experiences in Spain that have emerged from using photography as a tool for observing and representing territories and their changes.

Structured around three key periods—the 1980s, the major urban transformations linked to the events of 1992, and the first decade of the 21st century—the exhibition presents the work of nearly seventy photographers alongside publications related to the eleven selected surveys.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
