This book traces Kati Horna’s steps from Budapest to Paris, Spain, and Mexico, following the career of a cosmopolitan figure in the twentieth-century avant-garde.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of photographer Kati Horna, the Museo Amparo in Puebla has organized an exhibition of her work, scheduled to travel later to the Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona. The catalogue-book of the exhibition, published under a joint imprint with Editorial RM, represents a recognition of Horna’s photographic career and is the first adequate single-volume treatment of her work.

The book traces Kati Horna’s steps from Budapest to Paris, Spain, and Mexico, following the career of a cosmopolitan figure in the twentieth-century avantgarde. It contains essays by Péter Baki, Jean-François Chevrier, Estrella de Diego, Juan Manuel Bonet, and José Antonio Rodríguez, as well as a chronology of Horna’s life drawn up by Ángeles Alonso, a text by her daughter Norah Horna, and documentary material from her personal archive. The reproductions in the book, representative of all the genres practiced by Kati Horna, include hitherto unpublished images.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
