As if they were motion picture stills, the images in this book make up a sequence of people and scenes of the Calle Junín, one of the best-known thoroughfares in Medellín, Colombia. The concept of the book is the result of the fascination and nostalgia produced by the pictures of passers-by taken by the fotocineros, the street photographers of the city.

The texts, laid out perpendicular to the images, evoke the sense of movement, of walking. In this way the pictures — treasured souvenirs, for their owners, of the alliance of love and memory — bring us back to a bygone age, recapturing the clothing, cars, buildings, advertisements, shops and display windows that provided the setting for the ephemeral strolls of pedestrians in Medellín.

For almost three years, from 2005 to 2008, some 400 images were collected to form the basis of this book: an exploration of street portraiture, of Colombian fotocinería, and of the snapshots of passers-by taken by the thousands on the Calle Junín. It is a volume full of echoes and reflections, of a few lost steps, frozen in time.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
