Tonatiuh is a series in which Juan Brenner carries out an in-depth visual study of current Guatemalan society from the perspective of miscegenation and the incalculable consequences of the Spanish conquest, establishing Pedro de Alvarado not only as a central figure in the conquest of Guatemala, which in fact he was, but as a key figure in the formation of a complex, segregated and deeply troubled society.

The book approaches topics of social impact in Central America such as violence, gender issues and migration, providing a panorama of modern-day Guatemala. Brenner visited more than 50 towns across the country, following Alvarado's steps. At the end of the volume a map indicates the places he went, with an explanation of the images that gives a powerful vision of the work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
