"This is my favorite little series. I had never created a work like this before, and I haven't since, but it was heavily influenced by Aya Koda's novel 'Kimono.' who had lost her husband at a young age, with mourning clothes, I convinced Miki Aoyama, a model I was very close to at the time, to play the widow in the "Kimono" series, I wanted to represent the first half of a woman's life, up to her marriage, her husband's death and her determination to become independent. — Eikoh Hosoe, 1988

Limited edition of 500 copies accompanied by a certified original print and measuring 13 x 18 cm

Hosoe provided the images and layout for his contribution to this book and, after completing the proofs, sadly died at the age of ninety-one. His family provided the seal with his name, imprinted on the back of every original print included in the books.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
