“It Will Hold You” by Alex Ramos is a handcrafted artist's book, inspired by a long-standing passion for railways. The book presents three intertwined perspectives: photography, abstract texture studies, and a text that invites a meditative journey on movement, memory, and transformation. The front of the book features black-and-white photographs taken along the train line where Ramos grew up in Berkeley, California. Between trains, he walked for miles, photographing peaceful scenes of his surroundings. The back side presents a conceptual interpretation of trains and the energy they transport. Through “Railway Images,” texts, vernacular photographs and ephemera from Ramos’ archive, the sequence forms a testimony to his personal experiences shaped by trains. “Railway Images” are created through a process in which Ramos places pre-cut sheets of paper on the tracks in use, well before a train passes, allowing them to be crushed beneath the locomotive and carriages. Each footprint is unique and is associated with the location, the locomotive number and the approximate speed of the train that generated it. During his explorations, Ramos recorded railway radio transmissions which were then transcribed and inserted into the image sequence. Together, these elements invite us to reflect on the physical and emotional connections with the railways and on the stories they contain of departure, passage and continuous movement.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
