The first monograph dedicated to the visionary trans artist Greer Lankton (1958-1996), whose lifelike doll sculptures had a shocking impact on 1980s New York. Lankton began making these incredible dolls as a child and continued to produce them obsessively until her death at just 38 years old. They were a means to explore his complicated relationship with the human body. In the book's 100 photographs, all taken by Lankton herself, these figures have a life of their own: chatting grumpily at a party, strolling along a beach or relaxing on an East Village porch. In this extraordinary cast of eccentric characters – usually feminine, often bizarre, always radiating a glamorous confidence – we find characters invented by Lankton herself alongside well-known icons such as Divine, Coco Chanel, Andy Warhol and even Lankton herself. Born in 1958 to a Presbyterian minister in Michigan, Greer Lankton moved to New York in 1978 and became a star of the downtown scene. There, her unconventional elegance was immortalized by Peter Hujar, David Armstrong and her dear friend Nan Goldin, who described her as "one of the East Village's renaissance stars: beautiful, glamorous, wild and hysterically funny." Edited by Francis Schichtel, Jordan Weitzman and Nan Goldin.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
