Freddie, Rory Mulligan's debut book, brings together a corpus of black and white photographs spanning over a decade of the artist's work. Driven by the death of a childhood friend and an unrequited first love, Mulligan turns to photography and the places of home to interrogate his personal history, his relationship with other men and his place within the canon of documentary photography. Images of the suburbs, crystalline and at the same time alienating, are interspersed with portraits and self-portraits full of tension, resulting in a fracture, both poetic and rhythmic, of the traditional documentary narrative. The process of creating this work was deliberately extended over time: Mulligan often distanced himself from it for months, sometimes for years, to dedicate himself to other projects. The artist considers Freddie something that goes beyond the purely autobiographical dimension: a revelation of himself and his own journey through mourning, the search for intimacy and the need for self-affirmation.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
