Oleksandr Glyadyelov, born in 1956, is a Ukrainian reporter who has documented wars and armed conflicts in Moldova, Nagorno-Karabakh, Chechnya and Ukraine, as well as having produced several long-term projects. This volume collects over thirty years of his work, typically in black and white and shot with a Leica. The book focuses exclusively on images taken in Ukraine and follows a narrative that develops around four central themes in the author's practice: the 1990s as a period of transformation and disintegration, children as an insider's view of a condition of vulnerability, protest as a phase of civic self-determination and finally the war, which Glyadyelov has documented for many years. In these images, one can feel the existence of a relationship of trust with the subjects of the photographs. Often they are those who are rarely seen or who are only shown from the outside. Glyadyelov establishes and maintains important and lasting relationships with the subjects of the images, bonds that go far beyond the frame. The photographs are testimonies shared with them. Glyadyelov helped define Ukrainian documentary photography through his constant attention to those on the margins, his ongoing work with communities in need, and his willingness to stay in the places others abandon. This work aims to tell the story of a country in a phase of dramatic change.
