In the infinite expanses of the American West, Louise Mutrel's captivating photographs reveal a world where the real mingles with dreams, where every detail is a piece of a giant puzzle that the artist assembles with the delicacy of an archaeologist. Her aim is not simply to capture landscapes, but to unearth the traces, the clues concealed in the folds of these lands. The natural elements take on a new form through her lens; each photograph is a reinvention of the landscape, the inspiration of the surrounding nature mingling with pure invention. Yet beyond the natural beauty there is a palpable strangeness. In these vast expanses, where one would expect to find humans, there are only replicas, creatures strangely familiar yet so far removed from us. Aliens and dinosaurs populate these spaces of solitude, as if in an attempt to fill a void, to make this territory a little less deserted. Louise Mutrel plays with scales, sometimes making the immense smaller, reducing mountains to heaps of sand, canyons to tiny fissures, places where past and future mingle.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
