For 'Kotoba', shot from above of a three-person family on a futon, Koichiro Kimura received an honourable mention at the 2014 Canon New Cosmos of Photography. Here he photographs his own small son using the toilet: as a father attending the boy who cannot yet wipe himself and helping with his excretion, Kimura catches the endlessly varied expressions the child shows each time. The face that appears is indescribably endearing, brimming with innocence and earnestness. 'A child lives each day with all its might, and defecation is one part of that; for the child it is not something dirty but something close, like a dear companion,' he says — a book everyone, young and old, can enjoy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
