Cinema was born in 1895; in 2015 its original apparatus is no longer among us — thus the world goes, one technique dies, another appears. My research takes place in a moment of transition: I began working on cinema in 1990 and showing it in 1992. In 1993, in Washington, I began a series of photographs showing film frames corroded by time and storage conditions; two years later I exhibited them at MoMA in New York. Since then I view films in Western film libraries and private collections, extracting "decomposed" images without retouching them.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
