Mixed media: photography, drawings, texts, a notebook and a short photographic film

July 1st, 2007: Fersen, aged 6, and Eva, aged 4, leave Paris to live 900 km away. The distance that now separates us matches the bond that ties us. Their mother has always travelled a great deal; until now this strengthened the relationship I had with my children, but this time her departure separates us. A project then took shape. Their childhood intertwines with the memory of my own, and this separation with the accidental death of my father when I was 10. With the father figure eclipsed, I made do with small things and slept less well at night. As for my children, they did not have time to kill the father — the hero had too short a life. I photographed what I could not express otherwise: knots that sometimes strangle or embrace. Restoring this new relationship allowed a letting go; the photographic imprint, centred on my life in their absence, helped me get through difficult moments and make visible certain aspects until then considered private. The interpretation of the photographs presented by each member of the family is never closed; they are so many traces that can be reinterpreted. This project brought together several media. Beyond photography — made with different cameras and formats — it also combines drawings, texts, as well as a notebook and a short photographic film. Time has passed over this series, begun nine years ago. Its interpretation is a family novel and an individual adventure made of personal memories but also photographs of loved ones.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
