Produced on the occasion of the Nothing Lasts Forever retrospective at The Photographers' Gallery, London

Now You See Them Soon You Won't is a compact collection of thirty key images by Peter Mitchell, published to coincide with his Nothing Lasts Forever retrospective at The Photographers' Gallery in London. Mitchell, the great chronicler of Leeds, has spent over fifty years photographing the city—its corner shops, scarecrows in the surrounding fields, demolition sites, paintwork and people. The thirty images chosen here function as a wallet-friendly entry point to his work and as a souvenir of the retrospective, with the design itself drawing from Mitchell's earlier career as a designer in the 1970s, when he laid out type and image for posters, packaging and his own self-published booklets. The result is at once a sampler and a small, lovingly made object, faithful to the eccentric, particular spirit of Mitchell's longer books while inviting new readers into the work for the first time.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
