Ray's Sheds gathers Jem Southam's long photographic study of the working sheds of the reclusive Cornish sculptor Ray Exworth (1930–2015). Exworth was Head of Sculpture at Falmouth School of Art from 1959 to 1974 and, after stepping back from teaching, retreated to his cottage in west Cornwall to make work entirely outside the public eye. Across the back garden, outbuildings and lean-tos he assembled The Circus, an extraordinary lifelong cycle of wooden box constructions, chalk drawings and sculptural ensembles, almost none of which was ever exhibited. Southam, a close friend of Ray and his wife Susie, visited the property regularly from the 1980s onwards; with their permission he made a quiet, patient record of the sculptures in situ—pressed against shed walls, stacked under tin roofs, gathered in shafts of dusty light. After Exworth's death, Southam returned to photograph the sheds again, with the memories of the maker and a renewed wish to share this hidden life's work. The book holds together both registers: the studio still alive with its inhabitant, and the studio as posthumous archive.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
