Follow-up to The Pond at Upton Pyne project, a long-term study of a single site

The Pond at Upton Pyne brings together Jem Southam's long-term photographic study of a small pond near Upton Pyne in Devon. Working with his customary 8x10 view camera, Southam returned to this single location across many years and across all seasons, recording small changes in the water, the surrounding vegetation, the light and the weather. The project is part of his sustained practice of revisiting selected sites over long periods of time, tracing slow transformations and the rhythm of seasons rather than dramatic events. The pond, never grand and easily missed, becomes under Southam's patient attention a kind of barometer of a place: a record of how mud rises and falls, how reeds advance and retreat, how the sky lays itself on the water. The book is published by the Belgian imprint Imagebeeld Editions and continues a body of work centred on the modest ponds, rivers, harbours and edges of South-West England.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
