New afterword by Jem Southam
This revised edition of Jem Southam's iconic 1989 publication The Red River, originally issued by Cornerhouse in Manchester, brings back into print a foundational work of contemporary British landscape photography. The book contains fifty remastered images, revised texts and a new afterword by Southam himself. The granite spine of Cornwall acts as a watershed from which many rivers and streams flow north and south into the Atlantic and the English Channel respectively; the Red River rises east of Troon and flows just six or seven miles, north then west, into the sea between Gwithian and Godrevy. Its name comes from the deep red mineral colouration of the water, the result of centuries of tin and copper mining in the valley above. The book describes and evokes the distinct, layered history and culture of the valley—its mines, fields, walls and households—divided into seven parts that bear no relation to geographic or social divisions but instead serve as a structure for reflecting on a succession of myths and ways of seeing the landscape that surrounds us. The 8x10 view camera holds it all in steady, patient gaze.
