Colour photographs of Leeds
Edited and sequenced by John Myers

Originally published by RRB Photobooks in 2020 and edited and sequenced by John Myers, Early Sunday Morning is here reissued in a new, affordable Documentary Classics softback edition. The book shows a different Leeds from Peter Mitchell's earlier publications—'neither the sombre look at destruction seen in Memento Mori, nor the detached view of the man from Mars of A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission, but a more intimate document of Mitchell's own Leeds.' The title is a quiet homage to Edward Hopper's painting Early Sunday Morning of 1930, and the book gathers Mitchell's colour images of the city he has photographed for over five decades—corner shops, terraced streets, scarecrows in the surrounding fields, weathered shopfronts and the particular Yorkshire light. Reissued as part of RRB's Documentary Classics series, this edition aims to bring Mitchell's much-loved book to a wider audience.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
