Tim Carpenter's second book with The Ice Plant returns to the Central Illinois topography of his first monograph, Local Objects, with 56 black-and-white medium-format photographs made on a single winter morning. Where Local Objects meandered through changing seasons in an abstract sequence, here he follows a straight path, a two-hour walk from point A to point B, with little happening: fallow fields, standing water, dormant trees, the occasional tire track on worn pavement. He explores the stillness of this outdoor space with an almost erotic anticipation, a poetic strategy for narrowing the distance between human desire and the factual content of the everyday world.
