With Random Walk, each reader can compose their own unique street journey, sticking 62 black and white and 38 colour Polaroid sticker images into the book in any order they choose. Each copy, numbered and signed by Moriyama, becomes a singular object. Moriyama writes: 'Basically, I am in love with black and white photography. There is something dreamy about black and white, and I appreciate its symbolically abstract quality. On the other hand, if you ask me why I take colour photographs, especially colour Polaroids, I think it is probably because they allow me to directly experience the essence of photography, which is to make copies of the real world. After all, it seems like when I walk the streets, I am looking for somewhere other than here — I probably release the shutter only when I feel I have found the entrance to that alien world.'
