Text by SPG: "It is the story of a surpassing. Of a transfiguration. In otherness. These two read each other between the lines. Édouard Élias photojournalist, Fanny Boucher heliogravure printmaker. Technical dialectic and sensibilities intertwine. Together, they create a complex root system that branches out into an arborescence of projects. To celebrate the decade of the unspeakable, they bring back the transitional object of Édouard's detention, a chess game, and transform it into a work. The outlet becomes 'elevasion'. It is the story of a surpassing. Of a transfiguration. In art." During his months of captivity in Syria, as a hostage of the Islamic State, Édouard Élias crafted a chess set in the darkness of his cell. Without being able to glimpse the sky for nearly a year, this game was his only space of freedom. Le printemps arrive, et avec lui les hirondelles. traces the collaboration between Édouard Élias and Fanny Boucher, heliogravure printmaker, around the chess set, symbol of elevation and evasion.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
