Raymond Depardon, photojournalist, documentarian and artist, began his career as a press photographer. His reportages from Algeria, Indochina and Biafra made him famous. Today Depardon is France’s most important contemporary photographer; he has made 42 films and published countless books. Between 1961 and 2013 he regularly photographed in Berlin. One of his pictures from August 1961 shows children playing on Bernauer Straße beside the freshly erected border wall. The division of Berlin is a recurring theme, as are the Tunix congress of 1978, the state visits of Robert Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth during the Cold War, the fall of the Wall and the wastelands and building sites that followed reunification.
